A new Francophone Secondary School in Reunion will include gymnasium spaces designed for shared use by students and the broader Airdrie community.
Through a 30-year joint-use agreement, the City of Airdrie will operate recreation programming in the facility during 50 per cent of prime-time hours. This will bring additional indoor recreation opportunities closer to home for residents in Reunion, Williamstown and Airdrie's NW quadrant.
The gymnasium will support a range of City-led recreation programs designed to meet the needs of a growing community, including:
Programming at this location is intended to support local recreation needs. Activity levels are expected to be comparable to other school gymnasiums in Airdrie. The City does not anticipate hosting large-scale events, such as tournaments, at this facility. Larger events will continue to be accommodated at purpose-built facilities like Genesis Place.
The double gymnasium design allows for a variety of activities to take place, including:
Capacity will vary depending on the activity and program format; however, most recreation programming is expected to serve smaller groups.
City programming is anticipated during prime-time hours, when demand for recreation programming is highest and aligns with standard community use of school facilities.
Outside of the City's scheduled programming, the gymnasium will continue to be used by the school and may be available for community rentals managed by Conseil scolaire FrancoSud.
Expanding recreation opportunities is a key focus for Council as Airdrie continues to grow. This shared-use gymnasium helps bring programs and services closer to where people live, making it easier for residents to stay active and connected to their community. By partnering with Conseil scolaire FrancoSud, the City is able to add new indoor recreation space in a cost-effective way while supporting increased access to programs like drop-in sports, group fitness and family activities.
