Project details and instructions

1. Using any device, take 5 – 8 photos based on the following questions:

  • What is a place you like to meet with friends?
  • What is a place that reminder you of good times with friends?
  • What is a place that makes you feel less safe or less at ease?
  • What is a place that doesn’t make you feel seen or included
  • When you want a quiet place to be alone, where do you go?

2. For each photo, write a simple caption describing:

  • What is in the photo
  • What this space represents
  • Why you chose it

3. Submit your photos

  • Upload your photos

Privacy and safety considerations

  • Make sure you get permission before you take pictures of a private property such as a home or workplace (when the property is the main focus of the photo)
  • Do not take pictures of an individual (where the person is the main focus of the photo)
  • You are not required to get permission when taking a photo of a public space
  • You are not required to get permission when taking a photo of a group of people where individual faces are not recognizable or if you are taking a photo of something and a person happens to walk into the shot
  • Always use your judgement and never put yourself in risky situations; meaning don’t stand in the middle of the street for that “perfect” shot and be cautious about where you travel in the community, particularly by yourself, in the pursuit of a photo.
  • If you want to take a picture of a location that is unsafe to visit, you may take a picture of a similar area somewhere else and explain which area you are referring to.
  • Use a buddy system, especially when going to places you are not familiar with
  • Don’t do anything you wouldn’t usually do (i.e., take a photograph while driving or taking a photograph in a location that puts you in danger)
