City invites youth to share perspectives through photography

June 25, 2026
For immediate release

Airdrie, AB – The City of Airdrie is inviting youth between the ages of 15 and 24 to help shape the future of their community through a new initiative, Airdrie Through Your Eyes – Youth Photovoice Project.

As part of the City’s work to develop a Community Safety and Well-Being Plan, the project is designed to gather authentic youth perspectives on safety, belonging and daily life in Airdrie through photography. By participating, youth will have an opportunity to share their lived experiences and contribute to meaningful community change.

“Youth are an essential part of our community, and their perspectives help us build a stronger, safer Airdrie,” said Mayor Heather Spearman. “This project is an opportunity for young people to share their experiences in a creative and meaningful way, and to directly influence decisions that will shape our city’s future.”

Participants are invited to take between five and eight photos using any device that represent their experiences in Airdrie. The images should reflect places and moments that are meaningful to them, such as where they enjoy spending time with friends, locations that remind them of positive experiences, areas where they may feel uncomfortable or less safe, places where they may feel excluded or unseen, and spaces they go to recharge or spend time alone.

While capturing these images, youth are encouraged to prioritize safety and respect. Participants should avoid photographing themselves or other individuals as the main subject, obtain permission when photographing private property and respect the privacy of others. They are also reminded to avoid unsafe situations, consider using a buddy system if needed and never put themselves at risk to take a photo.

The photos collected through this initiative will help identify what is working well in Airdrie while also highlighting youth perspectives on safety and belonging. The insights gathered will play an important role in shaping real, community-driven solutions that support a stronger and more inclusive city. Submissions may be shared confidentially as part of the City’s Community Safety and Well-Being Plan.
