City of Airdrie to celebrate National Forest Week with community tree planting event

AIRDRIE, AB – The City of Airdrie is inviting residents to help grow the community's urban tree canopy by planting 100 trees during National Forest Week on Sept. 23, 2026 (weather permitting).

The community tree planting event highlights the important role trees play in creating a healthy, resilient and sustainable city. By expanding Airdrie's urban tree canopy, the project will help enhance parks and public spaces while supporting long-term environmental goals.

"Trees provide environmental, social and economic benefits that will be enjoyed for generations,” said Mayor Heather Spearman. "This National Forest Week, we're proud to bring residents together to help grow Airdrie's urban tree canopy and strengthen our community's resilience to climate change."

Residents of all ages are encouraged to participate. As well as planting trees, participants can learn about proper tree planting, watering and tree care from the City's Urban Forestry Technician.

The event is part of the City's ongoing commitment to maintaining and expanding Airdrie's urban forest. Every new tree contributes to a healthier environment, supports biodiversity and helps create more comfortable outdoor spaces for residents.

"Urban trees do more than add beauty to our parks and streets," said David Jarand, Urban Forestry Technician for the City of Airdrie. "As trees mature, they help cool our neighbourhoods, improve air quality, manage stormwater and store carbon. Planting trees is one of the simplest and most effective ways residents can contribute to a healthier and more climate-resilient community."

Because there are a limited number of saplings available, planting opportunities will be offered on a first come, first served basis, however, we encourage everyone to join us to learn about urban forestry and celebrate National Forest Week, even if not all attendees have the opportunity to plant a tree.
